Thursday, August 14, 2008 Bunny Modern, or What the Hell...? I just finished Bunny Modern by David Bowman. It takes place in the 2020s where electricity has disappeared--possibly flowing backwards to the 1960s?--and so has the sperm count. With the birthrate on the decline, there's a rise in kidnappings of babies and the evolution of the nanny into a corporate, gun-toting, drug-sniffing, baby-bodyguard force. Throw in the narrator, a guy who's way too old to be in love with the girl--but thanks to some rejuvenating recreational drugs, isn't exactly a dirty old man, at least on the outside-- plus he apparently has some kind of super-clairvoyance talent--a lot of men do? probably a trade off for the low sperm?--he can tell the rest of the story when he's not actually present; which is a lot. Then there's the Ishmaels, New Jersey, Fred Astaire, Lit Wear, Radio City Music Hall. And a 40-year-old baby that just won't grow up. Literally. I have no idea what I just finished reading. posted by Evil Wayne | 11:20 PM 0 comments Friday, August 08, 2008 08.08.08 Eight has been my lucky number since grade school. So far today, however, there has been a distinct lack in the showering-of-mystical-luck on Eight's part. I might go so far as to say there has been an utter failure to live up to my expectations. I may have to go back to not believing it you, Eight. Unless you get off your ass and start dishing out the good fortune, pronto. posted by Evil Wayne | 2:42 PM 0 comments Friday, August 01, 2008 eFlotsam On the BrikWars forum, I mention recording the PARV game back in '05. That gots me wondering what happened to that audio file(s) and I eventually dug them up; only four or five levels down in a random music folder on the external drive, but hey, I still got them. In fact, I've got the first "episode" chunked out at 20 minutes, complete with a bitty musical intro. I used to use Acid for mixing audio loops back in another freaking lifetime. I opened up the intro file, but it can't find the loops to actually display it. A bit more hard-drive archeology and I found the whole loops directory and from there, time starts to speed up as it's sucked into the black hole that is screwing with Acid. Back in the day, you could download weekly 8-packs of loops. Freebies really to enhance your library (about 70% of mine was made up of 8-packs). So I start wondering if they still did that and we're off to the internet again. Ping-pong my way around Sonic Foundry and then Sony and finally at AcidPlanet. And the moment I'm there, I remembered that I used to have a tiny page here. But it was bloody long ago, it couldn't possibly still be here, could it? Yes, yes it is: Hazy It's all electronic garbage floating around on them internets, but it's my electronic garbage. I may not be proud of some of it, but I'm not exactly ashamed (I think). And while I know I have copies of these someplace, I thought Renewed was totally lost. It was one of my personal favs, so I'm kind of happy about that. posted by Evil Wayne | 10:58 PM 0 comments Thursday, July 24, 2008 Random I thought I lost the remote for my iPod. A 3rd-gen, it's unique, because it connects to the player at the top, with a specialized connection point at the headphone jack. They don't make them anymore, either. ![]() Went on eBay, found a seller with just the remote cord in Hong Kong. The price is okay; with shipping it's $10. That's almost $20 cheaper than when I bought the first replacement (they get twisted up and the wires come loose). After I bought it, I found my cord in my luggage. But I'm not bothered at all. Now I actually have a replacement for when the remote finally does fail, something I probably wouldn't have done until it actually failed and then it might be even more rare. *** A series of thunderstorms rolled through last night. At one point, it was directly overhead. Lightning and thunder almost at the same time. The house actually shook with the thunder. So loud, my initial reaction was that some kind of massive car wreck had just occurred. Oddly, TheBoy never woke up. *** The local news goes nuts over weather events. We don’t get freeway chases (called highways here in the east, because nothing is "free" here), or bank, hostage holdups, or demonstration riots (not since the 70s anyway). But we get weather and it's always treated like the outbreak of WWIII. They issued a tornado warning and, at that point, they just throw out common sense and just start repeating things over and over, ad nauseam. Even after the warning is canceled, they just can't help themselves. I didn't dare turn on FOX. They'd probably blame it on the Democrats. *** We watched Ghost Story. Weirdest sighting ever: The girl in the film played the Borg Queen. *** Everybody at work watches baseball. Why am I always on the outside of things? It's not so much I want to watch baseball, it's more along the lines of: Why does everything I enjoy only serve a niche market? *** Looking for a light bulb a couple of days ago, I found this: ![]() It's a panel from a Mad Magazine spoof of Outland, which, after all these years, I still find funny--and is an extremely odd thing to find while looking for a light bulb. *** I have orthostatic hypotension. Which is a fancy way of saying I get dizzy when I stand up too fast, just like millions of other people. Could be a salt problem. Fun Fact: Your leg muscles act like pumps to get blood back up to your heart. *** We do technical publishing at work. It's all books on either radar, biomedical, or process management stuff, sometimes with ridiculous amounts of math or nano-medical terminology. This, however, is an actual footnote: 6. Bullwinkle's alma mater. I have now officially stopped asking questions. *** It's down-pouring again. I hope it lets up enough after work, there's a NELUG meeting. I hope Sullivan remembers the Paranoia book (if he goes--slacker!) posted by Evil Wayne | 1:45 PM 4 comments Saturday, July 19, 2008 Score
