Retro-Posting

Yeah, I've got things to say1, I'm just not timely about it. So I backdate some of the posts. That's not entirely true, I actually do sometimes have these things mostly written. I just don't have time to post them, especially now that Blogger.com switched over to being owned by Google. The way it interfaces with my journal software doesn't seem to work very well, so I'm forced to manually post everything now.

Oh, I'm aware that I'm way behind on Myra. I have 1.9 about 1/3rd written, I just have to find the time.

1. I didn't say they were important things.

Working at Home

Today is the first Wednesday I got to work at home. It's a new thing that came out of the whole office-switcheroo fiasco, so I'm home doing work. It's both good and bad. On the good side, I can surf iTunes for a plethora of podcasts and listen to them without headphones. I've burned through a bunch of shows about role-playing games, D&D and it really makes me long for the good old days of afterschool dorkdom.

On the downside, as soon as everyone started coming home, it turned out to be very difficult to concentrate. The PC is too centrally located and TheBoy is rather demanding, so I guess we'll have to work out some schedule for as long as this continues. I just ordered the Adobe Design Cs3 Suite, so I'll have almost all the same tools at home as work (I really need Ventura 10 to be complete). Now I should start looking for some freelance to boost my Lego money.

Old Skool Gaming II

BestBuy sent us a $20 rewards coupon and I picked up the Command & Conquer: The First Decade collection. C&C, C&C: Tiberium Sun, Red Alert 1 & 2, C&C Generals, plus all the expansions. A whopping 12 games on one DVD. I spent a good chunk of Saturday night playing the original Command & Conquer in all it's chunky, pixel goodness. It still a damn good game. Even though I'm much better at RTS in general, I still had some trouble with a couple of the missions (usually involving no resource gathering).

My generic plan is to play through them as they were meant to be and see if I don't have total burnout before I'm finished.

Even TheBoy found Red Alert 2 more to his liking. The graphics are better than the first one, and it uses lines to show where you're telling troops to go, so that helps him visualize what's going on. I did have to help him defend his base at one point, but for the most part, he's good to sit there alone.

There was one, priceless moment yesterday. I was sitting on the couch while he was playing. From where I sat, I can't see the screen, TheBoy is off to my upper left, facing my general direction. I heard the air-raid siren telling him a nuclear missile had been launched by the enemy. I turned to look and it was clear he was oblivious to it. Then, suddenly, he was bathed in bright, white light and the sound of the nuke going off. His eyes grew as wide as they possibly could and his jaw, literally fell open. He was dumbstruck for a good 10-15 seconds.

"What happened, pal?" I asked.

He looked over at me, his mouth still slightly open, "They blew up my base. It's all gone."

Go Atikay

Kate graduated from the machining program she's been in for the last 8 or 9 months this morning. But not only did she just graduate, she did it at the top of her class. Plus, she got other awards for academics and spirit. On top of that, she gave the speech for her team and she was probably the most animated one up there.

Which is especially refreshing when you consider this is a publicly funded program, therefore they have six dozen people involved with it from local politicians, state politicians, community leaders and a host of other people they probably just pull in off the street under the notion of it's their tax dollars or something. And everybody speaks--at length. And, this is also the kind of event that always takes place on a nice, hot day in a non-air conditioned, public building.

But it's all about Kate, so that's not too much to have to put up with. I'm really proud of her accomplishment. It isn't easy when you consider she's been in the program full time, worked a 45 hour job and took care of 2 kids. Good God. Hell, I get flustered trying to remember to put fabric softener in with the wash.

I'm ticked that I totally forgot my camera, or I'd have pics up here.

Probably the one where she almost fell down the stairs.
