Monday, February 26, 2007 Pain Monday I woke up with a migraine this morning. Actually, I didn't sleep that much beforehand; I know I saw 1:30, 3:00 and 4:20 until around 6 AM I seemed to be awake with a pounding headache. So, realizing that I was beaten before the day begin, I threw in the towel and called in. But sleep I could not. So I did the only thing I could do, take a handful of painkillers and lay on the couch. Around midday, I was better enough to chug down some coffee before *that* headache joined forces with the first one and became the Godzilla of headaches (probably Mothra or that thing with that looked like a cross between an alligator and a knife). I spent the rest of the day disassembling the body of the Statue of Liberty set and sorting it as I went. I now I have more sand green corner bricks (1x3?) than I will probably *ever* need. posted by Evil Wayne | 7:58 PM 0 comments Thursday, February 22, 2007 Serial Thursday: Myra 1.6 This story is moving slower than I originally envisioned it. Probably because I somewhat ramble on at times or maybe I don't have as good an idea of pacing as I think I do. Regardless, things are just starting to get going by the end of this chapter. I still have six days to get Myra 1.7 out in order to hit my twice-a-month goal. To that end, the link to it is posted, but it goes nowhere at the moment. I'm being weirdly optimistic about that, considering I haven't written a single word of it yet. posted by Evil Wayne | 1:12 PM 2 comments Tuesday, February 20, 2007 The New Monitor Finally, I actually managed to get someone to help me. It probably didn't hurt that it was the weekend and they're just chock full of employees wherever you go. Gateway 24" HD Widescreen, baby. It's freakin' ginormous on my desktop. It's taller than my old 19" tube, and it has a bunch of different connection points in back. Picture-in-picture too. I hooked up TiVo to it and have it running when TiVo is on, because I'm too lazy to tilt my head up, apparently. ![]() So, you know it all can't go smoothly, right? Sunday night, around 1 AM, I finally decide to move the 19" from the floor to the "storage area" (also know as The Front Hall). The stairs are wooden, no carpet. I move whatever appear to be in my way, and pick up the 50 pound monster and start for the stairs. Up one, then the second, I slip on a tray I somehow didn't see. I crash forward onto the monitor, which drives a corner into the wall, then backward and down the stairs, monitor landing near me after bouncing off my foot. I lay there for a few seconds and nobody hears it. Good thing I didn't knock myself out, or somehow crush my ribcage. They wouldn't find me until morning. I've to a nice long bruise across my chest as well as one on my leg. I seriously thought I broke a toe, but over the next day it felt better enough for me to think otherwise. It still hurts and if I walk for any length of time, I think I start limping slightly. The front hall wall has a deep triangle of plaster missing. posted by Evil Wayne | 1:34 PM 0 comments Monday, February 19, 2007 Kitchen Finalized the cabinets we want, contracts signed, first payments made. Hopefully in the next six weeks, we'll have a new kitchen and that fucking leak fixed. Have I mentioned I hate this house? posted by Evil Wayne | 4:43 PM 2 comments Friday, February 16, 2007 We Live In a World of Service and the Service is Bad My boss said that about a month ago. I don't know if he got it from somewhere else, but it is freakin' appropriate lately. Last night I went in search of a shop vac, so I could try to suck some of the water out of the carpet before flesh eating fungus takes over. I went over to Sears, because that seemed like a nice, safe choice. I quickly found the unit I wanted, a small 6 gallon job that was on sale. But the only one left appeared to be on an overstock shelf up high. I wandered around the tool department for a few minutes before realizing I was completely alone. I couldn't believe it. How many fucking stores do I have to go to in order to get a single fucking salesperson to say boo?!? Christ! I started to widen my search for anyone that might work there, but as soon as I did, I realized how angry I was starting to get over this. I've worked in retail. I'm trying to have some semblance of understanding, but this is ludicrous. Yeah, I know it's a weekday; Schedule some fucking coverage. I drove down to Lowe's where, not only were the shop vacs where I could reach them, there was a guy in the isle asking if I needed help and he went over it with what was probably to him normally boredom, but it seemed like uber-zest to me. Go Lowe's! When I finally got home, I unpacked it and went to work on the carpet. For about an hour or so I kept going over the area (probably around 4x6'?). It was cold, damp and smelled like wet, sweaty gym socks down there. At the end, I got probably a quarter gallon of liquid out of the carpet (that might be over estimating). It looked pretty nasty: ![]() After I got a fan down from the attic and let it run all night. This morning, it was noticeably dryer. Not dry mind you, but dryer. It will probably take several days for it to be completely dry, maybe a week. ![]() No Serial Friday, today. I've got too much going on as you can see. If I manage to get back on track, I'll just post it as soon as I can instead of waiting for a Friday. posted by Evil Wayne | 4:51 PM 2 comments Thursday, February 15, 2007 Flooded The kitchen (which is below ground in my house) was totally flooded yesterday. There's a leak somewhere behind the stove--which we are getting fixed, and soon--but when the weather is like this; snowy, icy and rain, it causes water outside to backup someplace and leak into the kitchen. I don't think I've ever seen it this bad. The water was actually flowing out from under the cabinets. I had towels rolled up just to dam the water from getting any further. We went through all the towels in the house, and when they were saturated, Tine had to throw them in the washing machine on a spin cycle just so she could wash them. Then into the dryer and back onto the floor. I think she did about 4 loads of towels yesterday. Two throw rugs I had to toss outside over the railing (they were frozen solid this morning). Unfortunately, we totally forget it could flood. It's been awhile since we last saw water in the kitchen. So not only did it have time to build up, it soaked the wall-to-wall in the dining room with is a fucking mess now. You can't walk over a huge section of the carpet and we have to jump over it just to get in and out of the kitchen. I have to buy a shop vac today just so we can hope to walk over that part any time soon. I hate this house.

1 comments Tuesday, February 13, 2007 Monitor My monitor is all fucked up. Not always, but more frequently, I'm getting a lot of this: ![]() It's been getting worse. At first it was just a single line, then a couple. Now it sometimes takes up a whole third of the screen, making it useless to try to navigate or read. Not to mention that it vibrates and bounces, which gives me a headache and fast. Okay, so it's time to get a new monitor. After futzing around, I decide on this one and start looking around. Looks like Circuit City carries it. So I go there and, it being Tuesday, they're not over staffed. The kid in the computer area is helping this woman who's got this constant snarl on her face. I mill about, because I've worked retail and I know he can't stop talking to her. I'm not listening exactly, but it seems like she's just making stuff up. The short of it comes down to this: She wants an MP3 player, but she doesn't have a computer. What? What?!? Fifteen minutes go by before that little gem comes out. Finally, I get to ask him about it and they're out. Of course they are. So I'm off to go home, and it occurs that perhaps CompUSA, across the street has one. I call Tine, she check the website and they have it. So I turn around and head back. Just like Circuit City, a Tuesday night does not have plethora of employees. And the kid in that section is helping another couple. I think. I was never 100% sure about that. What I am sure about is that every time he seemed to be standing there, I would approach and he'd suddenly be off to do something else. He even made eye contact a few times, but said nothing. I actually let this go on for about 20 minutes before give the fuck it and leaving. I'm still out a monitor. posted by Evil Wayne | 10:53 PM 0 comments Sunday, February 11, 2007 Flat Came home last night from the NasKart BrikWar game (I'll get to that later) to find this: ![]() Tine said she even went out during the day. These tires are old--really old and this one in particular has been problematic. It has some kind of slow leak that's affected by the weather. Sometimes it can go weeks without loosing any air, then suddenly it's almost flat. Unfortunately, this time it was dead and, as with everything else, we wait until things are falling apart before fixing them. Sears had a decent deal on some new all weathers, so Sunday morning I was out there in the cold changing the tire to the donut. Which also was nearly flat. Luckily that was just from sitting there for years. And it only took about three hours to get in and out of Sears. They seemed to have only two guys working there and the line wasn't so much long as just not moving. That's the other thing, why am I always going when things are slow? posted by Evil Wayne | 5:00 PM 0 comments Friday, February 09, 2007 Serial Friday: Myra 1.5 Redux I did mean for today to be a Serial Friday for the next part of Myra. But, it's not. I still can't seem to manage my time well enough for this thing. Myra 1.6 is about 2/3 done, but I have to flesh out the end so I know where 1.7 will go and... Well, I should stop trying to write these things in and around dead time at work. What can I say; I have serious discipline issues. While plodding through 1.6, I realized I was wrong about how 1.5 ended and where I broke it. Not only is 1.6 now longer than 1.5, it breaks wrong at the beginning. So I've gone back and edited Myra 1.5 to add the ending that it should have had to start with (and only editing out the last sentence of the original 1.5 really). It doesn't add a lot, but it flows better now. I'm still shooting for twice a month and there's only two more Friday's in February. posted by Evil Wayne | 11:39 AM 1 comments Wednesday, February 07, 2007 Press 3 for Dominant Space Princesses Damnit! I totally blew it. posted by Evil Wayne | 12:59 PM 0 comments Tuesday, February 06, 2007 Cold All winter it's been about 40+ degrees, we've had no real snow and it feels like winter has been forgotten. But this is New England, and the weather turns on a freaking dime. I think it hasn't been out of the 20s since last week. I don't see that though, because that's the warm part of the day when the sun is up. No, instead, my car says things like: 9- or 6-degrees and takes me almost my entire ride to work or home before the heat finally comes on. But then I remember things like this and I'm all set. Cold? What cold? Why 22-degrees is downright balmy! posted by Evil Wayne | 1:44 PM 0 comments |
