Pave the Earth

Happy Birthday to the Interstate Highway System. 50 wonderful years of moving America at breakneck speeds.

Sometimes, literally.

Score One Against Fascism

The Senate barely defeated that piece of right-wing, distractionary bullshit yesterday, by voting down the proposed Amendment to outlaw burning of the flag. This is the thing the Republican-led Congress wants to deal with?!? Screw health care, screw the minimum wage, but save the fucking flag from free speech? It's a god-damn symbol.

For years the GOP claimed that if they had control they could make this a better nation. Well, they've had it and what have the done? Given their rich, business buddies massive tax breaks, lied to start a useless war, pillaged the treasury, circumvented the law left and right, spied on Americans, and now they want to gut the first amendment.

And for what? So they can maintain control.

This is nothing but a mid-term election ploy. Like that "terrorist" group they busted in Miami or the plan that was foiled about the NY subway. These things make the news because they want it to look like they're doing something. That they have been. I think they figure we're getting wise to the way that useless color-coded terror alert system was used in the last election. So if they trot out these "cells" they've managed to uncover in place of the alert system this time, so they can work it the same way. Even though these guys had no weapons and no plan, and were clearly not right in the head, the Administration is counting on the idea you'll forget that part. That you'll only remember the FBI arrested some guys and must be doing a good job keeping us safe.

Jesus H. Christ, what the hell has happened to this country?

It's like I've woken up in an alternate universe.

Everything's Coming Up Milhouse!

I got my order from BrickArms the other day. Two, 6-pack sets of minifig weapons in black (he even threw in a bonus RPG in grey). They are very swanky and give the minifigs a mean look. I can see now why Lego would be hesitant to produce such things. The megaphone-blaster is really ambiguous and even though we can all agree it's a blaster and it can look like a weapon, especially in the case of the Star Wars sets, it still has a certain cartoon element about it. Giving the minifigs realistic weapons seems to change them in real and unnatural ways. They seem much more violent now.

The third-party, Mystery Science Theater DVD came yesterday! I bought one episode from a online dealer of the Earth vs The Spider episode. I plugged it into the DVD player and it works, which is good. Looks like VCR quality, but that's okay. I'm not expecting hi-def television from something probably recorded in the early 90s. It even had the old, colored, world logo for Comedy Central in the lower corner. I'm hoping we can watch it this weekend. If the whole thing works and the quality is okay, then I'm hoping to get my hands on some of the other episodes that are no longer available. It Conquers the World and any of the Gamera films are tops on my list (and maybe Fire Maidens of Outer Space --"Outer space in a prop plane? I don't think so.")

Steve pointed out that Futurama might be going the way of Family Guy.

Speaking of TV making a come back, the local WB channel (a UHF station) is bringing back the old Creature Double Feature program from the early 80s this Saturday. It's a double-dose of cheesy monster/sci-if films. This is right up there with MST3K (sans the bots), and the first movie is Godzilla vs the Smog Monster. Rock on!

Lastly, I bought a copy of CorelDraw 12 Suite from Amazon and it's finally arrived. Not only does it update me to the almost latest version, but I got it dirt cheap. Cheaper than buying the upgrade directly from Corel. Strangely, it was also cheaper than it's currently going for on Amazon; for some reason, it's gone up by $70 in the last week. I'm pretty excited to get it, as it upgrades my home stuff substantially. I can start in on a couple of freelance projects. CorelDraw 8 has been wicked buggy on XP. Plus, this is the Suite version, so I'm also getting Photo-Paint, and a few other programs (which I will probably never use :P).

Now I just need to scrap up some more money for a graphic tablet, I'll be all set.

Dream Sequence

I was in Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress.

I was running through the forest with Princess Yuki, who's name in the dream was Suzuki --which is pretty good when you think about it. I had to look up the name this morning because I couldn't remember and, well at least it rhymes. The dream was also in black and white --I never dream in black and white, as far as I can tell, this is the first time.

So Princess Suzuki and I were running for our lives. I know that the general had been killed by these powerful ninjas. There were still out there trying to find and kill us. We fled into the mountains but they kept coming.

Finally, we were at a the bottom of a cliffside. There was a small, waterfall and reeds growing all around the basin and riverbanks. There she barked at me to climb and we started up the rock face next to the waterfall. Suddenly the ninjas were all around the basin. They just came out of the forest like they had always been there.

Suzuki dropped from the rocks and landed on her feet in a combat crouch. This was a quite a drop too, about 15 feet. I started climbing back down to protect her (ha!) because that was my job. As I did, a single ninja wearing a straw hat came forward. She though the hat away and revealed herself to be the Queen Ninja.

Suzuki and the Queen barked at each other a few times, while circling each other. I really can't recall what they were saying. Part of me thinks it was in Japanese and I wasn't supposed to understand.

Now I was at the bottom, but they had moved down the riverbank and I watched as they started fighting. It was very Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Actually it was more like the Matrix. The scene in the building lobby where Keanu does this cartwheel, picking up the machine gun? Yeah, Suzuki did pretty much the same thing, except she cart-wheeled over the riverbank, using the reeds to balance herself.

There was a mass of flying kicks and punches, as they came at each other and one would go down and then flip back onto her feet.

For some reason, I couldn't move. The other ninjas had disappeared, but I still couldn't leave the waterfall. Yet Suzuki and the Ninja Queen were getting farther and farther away from me. They were becoming obscured by bushes and trees. I would only see one of them come flying out of a bush or someone leaping from a tree.

Then, I could see them both. They were standing together on a flat rock in the center of the river. Suddenly Suzuki had a thick, crossbow bolt in her hand. She swung it around to stab the Ninja Queen, but the Queen blocked it easily, knocking the bolt from Suzuki's hand.

The Queen laughed as the bolt tumbled into the air and she reached up to grab it. As she did, Suzuki warbled a bit. And I knew, the way you do in a dream, that she had covered the bolt in poison. That she had tricked the Queen into knocking it out and grabbing it, but at the same time had sacrificed herself.

The Queen Ninja screamed in anger. Suzuki collapsed and feel into the river and a moment later so did the Queen.

I could move again and I raced down the river side to where they had been.
Frantically, I dove into the water to find Suzuki. But she was gone. I dove under again and looked, but there was nothing. Now I was getting upset. Again and again, I was under the water searching for her, but there was nothing but river bed and rocks. I kept having to come up for air because I was staying down too long. I started feeling like I was drowning.

Then the dream sort of shifted. I wasn't there anymore, but I could see Suzuki, as an observer. She was standing on the riverbank, surrounded by other people.

She said, very matter of factly, "I'm dead."

And the people there, the looked like a group of teens, laughed.

She looked at them perplexed, but they didn't elaborate.

Then they started giving her these small, fuzzy flowers. They had short, black stems and looked a bit like wispy fur. She held them up to her chest.

Then, very slowly, starting from those flower, the dream bled into color.

And then I was awoken by the non-stop chattering of birds outside my window.

Steamboy

We rented the anime Steamboy for the weekend and while there were elements that were visually pleasing, it was down-right boring. There are sections that move and seem to promise a more fast and fun film. But each of these sequences is ultimately drawn to a screeching halt -- sometimes rather jarringly-- by long expositions by the older characters. At first, this seemed okay, the plot needed some advancing, but there's this repetitive theme of science and it's unleashing of power that each of the main character feels the need to prattle on endlessly about. And I do mean endlessly; so much so that I forgot who stood for what by the end. Even the girl, who should have grown somewhat by the end of the film from a self-obsessed, sliver-spoon, brat to some form of realization that what her family does might not be for the better good, would wavier back and forth, never really developing at all. (Oddly, she was the only American in the film --I wonder what that's supposed to mean?)

Tine couldn't take it. She was interested at the start, when the action looked like it was going to unfold, but near the end, she just couldn't stay in the same room. Each time she came back in, she couldn't believe it was still on. Or that the same characters were giving the same speeches again! There was probably about 30 minutes of useless dialog that should have been cut. Overall it was a decent story, but it's execution left something really lacking.

Sketchworks

I've been meaning to scan these stupid little drawings I do at meetings. On Mondays we usually have production meetings and there's always this dead time at the beginning. I can't have a pencil and white space without something being doodled. Now, none of this is high-art, low-art or art. It's just a small sketch done in about three minutes or so. Usually, they're quite small, about an inch. Sometimes three if it's big, but it has to fit in the corner section of paperwork for the meeting.

Anyway, I don't have a Myra episode ready, but I did scan some sketches yesterday. One of the Mechanix for the BrikWar card that Mike asked if anyone wanted to take a shot at (although, mine is nowhere near what he asked for). Whenever that gets done, I'll post it, even if Mike doesn't use it.

So here's what I hope will be many doodles I do on Monday (maybe I should call it that instead: Doodles I Do On Monday [DIDOM]).

Doctor, Doctor

I was wicked late this morning.

I had a what I thought would be a quick doctor's appointment. I know that probably sounds silly, but I really thought it was just going to be a quick Q&A before work. I didn't even bother to tell work I had the appointment. I figured I might be about 15 minutes late for work, but that's usually okay around here as long as it's not every day. But I end up waiting longer than I ever had at the office and then, suddenly it's a good idea to get some blood work going. What?

To top it off, I get downstairs to the lab and they have this big sign: Due to a new computer system, please expect significant delays in being called. Does that even make any sense? You're new system is making things more difficult?!? Holy cow.

I think I got out of the office at about 9:30, but that wasn't the worst. For the most inexplicable reason, 128 is a parking lot. It's 9:30! WTF?!? Today is the day everyone is late for work. Luckily, my exit wasn't that far from the backup, but --unfortunately-- at that point, every street in Norwood is packed with cars.

I didn't get to work until after 10.

This Place is a Morgue

That's about it.

Don's gone; I think everyone else took a half day or something.
I just walked to the bathroom and back and saw exactly one other person in the building. It's freaky-quiet over here in production. I can hear someone on the phone in the other department, but it's downright creepy here. It doesn't help that it's overcast outside and when I turn around it's dark and empty.

If I didn't have actual work to do, I might see about skipping out --except I think one of the Big Kahuna's is in and they sometime troll around on Fridays to see who's in and who's cut out. So, by "skipping out" I actually mean, "leaving 5 minutes early".

I'm such a rebel.

Serial Friday: Myra

The third installment of Myra is online.

Which makes three weeks in a row and much more than I would have expected at this point. But I'm trying to keep up on it, so any breaks that occur (because it will eventually happen) will be short in duration.

For the record, the use of the term Nazi in this segment is referential, not literal.

Editing
•Did some extremely minor rewrite to the Prologue to fix some of the awkward working regarding how Jack remembers the past.
•Italicized Why in the third paragraph of the Prologue to add emphasis to the remark.
•Corrected another bad break in 1.2, which is really faulty HTML on my part. The formatting looks fine in the original version I have here.
•Corrected the indents in 1.2. For some reason I only added 2 non-breaking spaces to the start of each paragraph instead of 4 for that part.

June, But More Like November

I think we're averaging about one day of sunshine for 40 days of rain now. Everything is grey and overcast and it seems like it's been that way forever. I swear I've forgotten what raw sunlight looks like now. Yesterday, which was Nor'easter, the wind and rain was so bad along the main drag of Norwood it snapped off sapling right into the street. The wind almost ripped the awning off a storefront as we ate lunch.

On top of that, it's only been in the mid-50s the rain making it seem colder. This is June?!?

Going home last night took an extra 30 minutes because the roads are all partially flooded or big, gaping holes appear that eat SUVs. Out near Canton, they have this nice little dam and waterfall area. There's a tiny park with a bench next to the stone wall that's overgrown with plants. The whole area was flooded out as water was coming over and through the rocks. Closer to home there's another, bigger version of this and the runoff area was a torrent of violent water crashing into the rocks right before going under the roadway. The spray mist alone was like rain.

It's all very freaky.

Damn You, Evil Tuesday!

Well, it turned out to be a real Evil Tuesday anyway.

During a production cycle at work, artwork (which is sometimes a most generous term to call it) is often done first, sometimes a month or more before I touch text. But this particular project I got the artwork done way before the book even launched. So it sat there for almost 3 months before I needed it, which turned out to be today.

Only the folder is empty. Empty!

Okay, so I call down to the tech guys and see about restoring a backup. Only it isn't on the tapes. What? They start going through the monthlies and come up with zip. Holy shit, 20 hours of work just fucking evaporated. They go through everything downstairs and I scour every where it might be on my system (which is nowhere, because I don't work locally). At one point I go to check the hardcopy, because 3 months of blank backups start me wondering if I'm somehow misremembering doing it in the first place (which did happen to me once, when I first started). But the printouts are normal, they even have the date and file locations printed on the bottoms.

In the end, I'm just screwed. No files, no backups, nothing. A fucking mystery. Now, I have to start over and jam 20 hours of work into about 8 and somehow not blow a budget.

Fucking Evil Tuesday.

Mentos & Diet Coke

There are probably hundreds of videos on the internet of people dropping Mentos into tonic causing it to erupt like Mount St. Helens. But Jorge found one where they've elevated it a freaky, Blue Man Groupish artform.

Mentos & Diet Coke

Swanky!

Serial Friday: Myra

The second installment of Myra is up and running. Which advances the story all of about ten seconds. I also changed the numbering scheme for the serial from a double-decimal place to a single. That's mostly because I'm not sure that it won't top over 100 and it might look funky if it does. Plus, I've run the numbers and drop cases as individual images. So 1.1 is actually three different .gif files. Doing this means I don't have to worry about uploading any graphics as the entire run of them is already online. Yeah, it's exciting isn't it?!? I also corrected a bad break in 1.1. I'm already thinking there could be some minor edits as I go along, but I wonder if I should bother posting what I've changed?

Then There Were Four

FH#1 gave his notice yesterday, which will reduce the department to four, full-times and one-part time once he leaves in two weeks. This is the smallest it has been since I started here. Down from a time where there were nine of us. We even had an intern at one point. The whole building is like that, everywhere there are empty offices and desks with chairs turned over.

There will be tumbleweeds blowing through the corridors soon.

My boss doesn't think it can get any smaller, but I can't help but think this job can be done by a couple of monkeys and roulette wheel. Seriously, there's a lot of minutia, but it's not outrageous.

My fear is that I'll come in one day to find my cubicle replaced with a fish gutting station.
