The Cardinal

A deadly game of cat and ... cardinal?

We've had a cardinal in our back yard for awhile now. Actually, I'm pretty sure there are two, probably a male and female. The only reason this is at all interesting is that the damn thing won't shut up. What I assume is the male, will stand watch when the cat is out and he does nothing but chirp a warning the entire time. He will actually fly around and keep an eye on the cat the entire time she is outside. Meanwhile the cat, with her walnut-sized brain, is completely unaware of anything.

The Oblivious Cat. The Alert Cardinal

Maybe that's normal bird behavior. Do they normally alert their mate when a predator is around? It's darn freaky to see the cat, walking around, completely oblivious and have this red cardinal fluttering around from branch to branch to keep the cat in sight. Even when the cat is inside, at the slider, the bird will position itself in the tree directly across and call out a steady, methodical stream of single, annoying chirps.

What are you looking at? You lookin; at me? You lookin; at ME? Watching the sunroom.

Wow, add another inch of fur and your cat looks just like ours.

I can only guess as to your cat's motivations, but if it was our cat then she'd be oblivious to the bird but completely aware that walking around in the backyard was keeping us aggravated somehow.
