Serial Saturday: 4S

As this is the final installment for the 4S serial, I really wanted to get it in before the year is up as I had originally intended.

So here it is; The Finale: Episodes 96-100.

Enjoy.

Today

I thought I would post an update.

The wake is this afternoon and the funeral tomorrow. I haven't really been thinking about it much since the news. Like the rest of the planet, I hate funerals.

It's going to rain too.

I get to be a pallbearer again, which causes me mixed emotions.

Christmas Eve, Eve

It's one of those days at work where I'm totally not. Just got back from the provided holiday meal and it was pretty good. Free food is always good. We're supposed to be here until three, but I suspect my watch is inaccurate and 3 o'clock could be in 20 minutes.

I sketched this during a meeting earlier this week. I wonder if I can bill time to the colorization for today's workload?

Probably not.

Ho. Ho. Ho.

Serial Tuesday: 4S

Episodes 85-90 are now available. I'm afraid it's more padding, but at least it's action-oriented to some degree.

We're closing in on the end, kids. Just two more installments to go and this whole nightmare will be over.

O Tanenbaum

We got our tree late this year. A combination of bad weather, a NELUG meeting and generic laziness. As a result, we were denied the huge-ass trees. They sell out early and when we got to the nursery yesterday, they had only medium to small trees left.

Tine was happy. Every year she's got an issue with the trees I bring home. Too wide, too tall --there's still a nice twisted scrap in the living room from years ago. At least I didn't have to saw off part of the top and the bottom this year.

O Tanenbaum, O Tanenbaum, we sorry you had to die for Jesus' B-Day.

The whole house smells like pine, which rocks. I got the lights on and we had a little decorating fest tonight. TheBoy loved it. The other kids were into it too, both for the first time I can remember since they were very small.

Bring On Santa!

And I'm still loving this camera. It takes such awesome pics at nice and huge. The above image is scaled down. Here's a detail taken from the original:

This is taken from the actual size of the original.

Swanky.

Christmas Cards

I'm really terrible about getting holiday cards out on time. And by that I mean, I almost never do. Before I know it, it's Christmas and that makes it a tad too late to actually send cards. There's a cut off date that just blind-sides me every year. And I believe that time was last Friday.

And now that that time has passed we have arrived at the wicked-cheap-bastard solution. This is where I find a picture on the internet and run a hack job with Photoshop and viola! Christmas Cheer!

If you did not receive a card from us this year please print out the one offered below and paste it up wherever you've been keeping the throngs of merry wishes you've been getting this year. If you did receive a card from me, please contact me immediately (and possibly the FBI). I did not send cards this year.

Here's your 2005 Christmas Card:

Merry Christmas to all and to all a howling, rabid, ferret.

Enjoy!

"the idea and lay out is pretty neat. Those guys are douche bags though"[sic]

The !Zombie! game site has been, for some time now, getting all these mad hits. I mean it went from zero to sixty somewhere around late October. Mostly due to a blog entry at InkTank, which is funky because he's had like 1 entry since then. But a ton of people seem to stream through since he wrote it and I've been mildly amused.

Today I noticed this link from a Penny-Arcade forum thread and it's sort of harsh and goofy.

We're easy to pick on. It's a niche hobby and a niche game. We look like dorks (we are dorks). What I find amusing is that anyone wastes time thinking about it who doesn't have an interest. I mean, the quote about being bored and going Godzilla on the town; why would you have bothered to show up?

And why are we douches, again?

I think I'm missing some vital subcontext.

BF2 Leaderboards

I finally got around to checking the new leaderboard Prophet set up for our little BF2 outings. Jorge has said I had the best kill-to-death ratio of us all, almost 1:1 (he thinks it's probably because I fly so much, I can get a group of kills in a single bombing run that probably evens it out overall. I think he's right).

But I've made the next rank: Gunnery Sergeant.

I just have to log in sometime and it should take. Although, I hope I don't need any new badges first. The next rank looks like it requires a whole slew of basic badges and Knife is a bitch.

Go me.

Serial Thursday: 4S

Part II of this week's double entry is Episodes 81-85. This section is has the most padding of all, so don't expect too much. Which you probably don't if you've been actually paying attention up until now.

NELUG Meeting

There was a small gathering of NELUG at the mall last night. I spent the last of my Christmas budget at the Lego store, so this year will be a Very Lego Christmas. I think I bought all the mid-range mechas from the new Exo-Force line. They look pretty neat, but I have to say I think the alternate-models look cooler than the actual set itself.

The new robots look cooler than the Star Wars one. More useful too, with their big feet allowing for more stability. I see them making their way into all kinds of TL5+ games.

Here's a shot of a set Sullivan brought to the game last weekend:
Light Mecha by Lego.

I also picked up the Passenger Jet, which, while having limited reusable parts is still pretty swanky because it's just so dang big. I can't wait to put it together and have TheBoy try sailing it across the living room.

Sitting with Jorge and Joe last night we talked a bit about writing and possibly creating some content for our respective websites. A sort of round-robin story that I envision posting our segments on our respective sites.

Could be amusing.

Could be an exercise in pain.

I still have the audio-dramas ideas on the table and finally some people actually interested in producing them. Now I just have to come up with a script. I'm sure that's not difficult. :O

I'm also looking at the end of the 4S serial and working on something new. I've become accustom to looking at serialized text and I have some other ideas that are somewhat congealed.

Not to mention I still have all that BrikWar audio I have to chunk out and post. It's all part of The New Year.

At least I hope it is.

Sullivanize

I've coined a new term:

sul·livan·ize
Pronunciation: 'sul-even-"Iz
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -ized; -iz·ing
1 : to make more complex;
2 : to render something overtly complicated for the sheer sake of it;
3 : to modify especially by introducing ridiculously labyrinthine elements with a tenuous association to the relevant
- sull·ivan·i·za·tion /"sul-ivan-'zA-sh&n/ noun

BrikWar: VersaillesPunk

On Saturday we played the final installment of our first Year of BrikWars. This outing was all Sullivan and I have to say it was much more enjoyable than I expected it to be.

The Treaty Room before the mayhem.

Basically, it's the Treaty of Versailles and something goes horribly wrong between the English and the French. Both sides burst away from the table and start wailing on each other, with only the items in the single chamber to use.

I was on the French side, and I got one of the heros. My first guy went down quickly when the English dog (no pun intended) bit him in the ass.

But my other two guys did very well. The regular trooper, The Chancellor, only armed with a quill, managed to keep two Englishmen at bay with his fists. I was able to constantly hit and render them stunned. However, my fist of fury would do no further damage no matter how much I tried.

Finally, Jonathan had to interceed and cut my man's head off to end the battle, because Sullivan couldn't shoot worth a damn.

My hero, Monsieur D'LeBrie, did much better. He immediatly took to the table and began assulting the English with his saber and his Stupendous Feat. Which I pretty much used exclusively to strike a second time in any round. Only later I would save it to miss on some critical damage. For example, when I manged to Matrix my way out of the firing arc of the gatlin gun.

D'LeBrie did manage to inflict a lot of damage before finally being the last of the French to be taken out. And it took the power of the gatlin gun to do it.

D'LeBrie's life comes to a bloody end. But at least he on the throne.

Other highlights included a psychotic French cat that managed to kill an English swine before being done in by the suicidal Lady Erotica. And the English dog that nibbled French bum to death!

More Snow!
Yeah! They're letting us out at 1. Of course, if somebody had bother watching the fucking news in the last 24 hours, this wouldn't be a problem.

Of course, my 45 minute commute is going turn into 6 hours with the magical power of Snow in New England.

Sigh.

Snow!

You know, it's freakin' snowing like Dickens out there. Why am I at work?

Why am I not home, snuggled in my feety pajamas at the base of the wood stove, playing with my legos while drinking some hot coco (appropriately Irished up).

Sometimes, I hate being a responsible adult

Oh the Pain...

I twisted my freaking back this morning putting TheBoy on the toilet this morning. We were almost out the door --I was actually setting the alarm-- and he said he had to pee. So strip off his coat, mittens and hat and then, when I hoisted him on the toilet, my back twisted and there was this sharp, knifing in the middle of my back.

It fucking hurt -- It still hurts.

I managed to get him to daycare okay, but driving to work was a chore. Even sitting here, typing is painful. I've loaded up on painkillers, but so far, no dice.

So, just like Dr Smith whines, I'm walking around here: "My back! My back! Oh the pain!"

Slag

I've been all out of sorts since the Forum Fiasco two weeks ago. With it finally back, I feel like I've found my old, warm fuzzy sweater. I put a whole new site under puncducs.com, but it's still a work in progress, so there's not a lot there right now. And for now, the movement is glacial - but I think I'll probably put all my Lego stuff over there (not that there's a lot here).

===
We did a big Christmas shopping on Saturday. My mom came down to watch TheBoy because he's only good for about an hour when we go out. So we took advantage of the time and we're out for about 8 hours at the mall and the big stores around. It was probably only slightly more crowded than a normal Saturday, so I'd say we hit it just right.

We hit every store, I think. Besides the mall (where we were in Filines about eighty times) we hit all the big chains of Consumer Whorism. I actually like the set up down in Attleboro because the main road is only 2 lanes of traffic, but the bigger stores are in plazas that all have roads running around them. So you're only fighting traffic that's coming or going to about six or seven stores in that plaza.

The most running around we did was for DDR2 for Kelly. We wanted to get her the pack with the dance pad which we saw first at Target. But I'd rather get it at Best Buy to get my Reward points. Only they didn't have it. Then a trip to Circuit City showed they didn't have it either and we started to get panicky that if we didn't zip back to Target now, we would be out of luck.

But we're done with about 85% of our shopping. Which is awesome. Both of us were totally wiped by the end of the day. My calves are still achy. And we're doing that thing this year where we just buy the stuff we want (with the budget) and give it to the other to wrap. I'm too stressed to actually do much shopping for her anyway - and the Viking Lego sets are out and I don't want to miss them. :D

===
I'm back on the No-Red-Meat Wagon. It was about this time last year (actually I think it was January of this year) that I decided to try eating meat again. Frankly, I'm underwhelmed. Tine does make some great dishes, her goulash is freaking awesome. But I just can't shake the feeling that it's killing me. And that I somehow abandoned my principles after 15 years, whatever that might mean.

So I did it rather abruptly last week and that's caused some tension between us. She's mellowed out somewhat, but I know she's disappointed, but I can't really help it. I will miss that goulash though.

===
We finally broke down and bought another DVD player for the sunroom. The one I had in there was just not dealing with the Netflix DVDs very well. They come all scuffed up, but it's nothing terrible. Unless you're trying to use a player from early 1999. It just doesn't have the error-correction to handle them. It was a nice, bleeding-edge DVD player back in the day (because it cost a bundle) but its day has come and gone.

I think we got the new one for $50 at BJs. Not only does it handle the discs well, it has progressive scanning so now the movies fill the whole 55" screen on the sunroom tv. Freakin' Awesome. Now if I can just figure out why the surround sound isn't working correctly (another old tech).

===
Christmas decorations have been up for three weeks. Christmas music is being played at all possible opportunities. I'm totatlly going to be burned out, but I don't care. I've got so limited time to do anything this year.

===
What happened to Steve?

===
I'll try to get some 4S stuff up this week. I can probably double up on the episodes, like I said (I might cut them across two different days in the week). Keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully, I won't be too much of a slacker with my blog over the next couple of weeks.
