The Light at the End of the Tunnel

I spent a great deal of the last week working on trying to restore the forums to no avail. I scoured through support forums for answers and only got a few. Several different things to try and restore it, all failed. I routinely was up until 2AM working on it and taking my rage to a new level of pain. And my sleep debt to new heights.

The first problem was the database is too damn big to upload in one sitting. Apparently 26 MBs take a lot longer than 300 seconds to upload and the connection time's out. I finally figured out the correct compression it uses and got the file down to about 3 MB, and managed to upload it.

But multiple errors in the backup cause it to flake out. There's all kinds of unclosed marks and other oddities that the restore command doesn't like, so it dumps out. I can restore the forum's look and categories, but no a single post is restored.

Alfred was helping me a bit. He identified some of the problems, like unclosed statements and whatnot. But when I fixed the initial issues, it found more things it didn't like. The utility really wrote out a craptastic backup file. Or maybe it was the compression I was trying to use.

Finally, I posted the file and let CrankyDan look at it. Wherein he had no trouble at all with it. I almost freaked. So Dan went out of his way and wrote me a short cgi script to restore the database from the server (something I couldn't do with the tools I have). It took a few tries and the database had to be searched to correct some pointing issues. But as of yesterday around 10 PM, almost a week to the hour, the forum is back online in its new, super-secret home.

Can I get an Amen?!?

As a result of all this, I'm way behind on everything. Including my little 4S serial. I'll see about getting back on track with it this week. I might double-up the episodes to finish by Christmas (my original plan).
