Dead in the Water

I just can't get out of my own way at this point -- I've written so little in the last week that it's downright embarressing. It's not even worth giving a word count. I knew going in this time it would be rough, but I think I'm all but throwing in the towel at this point.

I'm not beating myself up about it either. Deciding to participate at the last minute without any concrete ideas -- I mean, what did I think was going to happen? I've just run out of steam.

I still think the story is a good one. I still think it deserves to be written. I'm just not sure if I want to keep doing it at the moment. I'm unmotivated and there's been plenty of distractions.

I pulled all the Christmas decorations down about a week ago. We spent the weekend decorating the house; putting lights around the rooms and playing Christmas music to death.

Yeah, I just don't care anymore.

There's been movies from Netflix -- we're getting about 2 a week now, and I'm trying to watch most of them. We just saw Kill Bill Vol. 2 and the whole thing, in toto, was freaking amazing.

The biggest distraction for me has been Space Empires IV.. They finally came out with a patch for everyone to upgrade to the new Deluxe Edition and I've been finding it very difficult to pull myself away from my newly created empire.

I can write, I know I can (the whole 4S serial notwithstanding) but I lack real discipline. I'll keep the idea that I'm still writing open. I won't pack it all in just yet, but I think there's not a lot of NaNoWriMo left in me this year.

Sigh.

What, there's a patch? where? I've been playing with the "Gold" version - what's this Delux?

Go to http://www.malfador.com/ and scroll down. It's the first topic on the list. Deluxe is the newest version of SEIV for the new publisher Strategy First.

I don't know how radical the change from Gold to Deluxe is, as Gold had a bunch of things the original (or Classic) had, like drones and red giant systems (I saw my first green giant the other day). So it's a bigger deal for me than for you probably.

But if we end up with a PBEM game, then we'll all need the same version.

Ok, installed the patch, and aside from nuking my save games, I don't see a difference. Of course, I didn't play the game enough to notice anything subtle.

It IS addicting. I'm kinda surprised I'm playing this over CIV4, but maybe it's the promise of PBEM that's driving me to learn the game better.

Yeah, the patch for Gold->Deluxe is small (sorry it nuked your saves). From Classic->Deluxe was ~80MB; like I said, it's a bigger deal for me. Plus I now have access to a whole slew of mods that I couldn't play before.

It epitomize that just-one-more-turn gaming - I'll be up late during the work week trying to get one more tech, one more ship, one more turn. I find it massively addicting, I've been playing since SE:III and bought IV when it came out about 5 years ago. Been playing it on and off since then. At some point I burn out, but I always come back. Which is why I'll probably buy SE:V as soon as it's out as well.

Glad you're enjoying it! :D
