Katrina and the Waves

I've been kind of avoiding the whole disaster in Louisiana because I got really burned out over 9/11 and I don't need that to happen again. But you can't completely avoid it, there's so bloody much coverage I think they've taking to beaming it directly into peoples government tracking implants.

I think the biggest revelation of the whole thing should be the fact the federal government completely failed to react and it exposes the fallacy that we are in any way safe from any kind of catastrophe, be it nature or man-made. The fact that FEMA didn't seem to have a plan for when cell-phones failed shows the ineptitude of the administrations mandate for preparedness.

It should open your eyes to the idea that since 9/11 they've done nothing but raid the coffers and plan out invading Iraq. Homeland Security is a joke. They gave us lots official new positions and a nifty color chart so that Joe six-pack feels safe and doesn't notice what they've really been doing.

A newscaster (sorry, can't remember which one) said something to the effect: A terrorist attack isn't something you can plan for; It's sudden and they claim they have a plan to help affect areas in case of such an event. Yet they had 2 days to prepare for the hurricane and they still can't pull it off.

Something is seriously wrong.

Here's an interesting blog from a guy still in New Orleans keeping the internet running. He's got tons of pics and a live webcam of a city street. http://mgno.com/

A couple rage-eriffic points to keep in mind:

-The failure of the New Orleans levees (yes, I know, this isn't exactly what happened, but the effects are the same) were rated as the number 3 probable/likely/plannable/whatever terrorist plot. Bushie decided it would be better to fight terrorism over there so these things might never happen over here.

-80% of the population was evacuated because there was warning ahead of time. There is typically no warning with a terrorist attack. The Feds botched the situation with only 20% of the affected population of a forseeable disaster pool at risk. Connect the dots yourself.

-The estimated cost to undertake a massive engineering effort to rebuild the coastline - and I mean to pre-sunk levels, not pre-Katrina levels - sothat none of the city is under sea level is estimated at 14 billion dollars. The cost of the big dig. The cost of 2 WEEKS of the Iraq war. And the money will never appear.

-Luckily, the money that could have gone to fulfill the requests to repair and maintain the levee system instead went into rich pockets in the form of a tax break. As for my $300 refund, I'm sure it'll be paid back with interest in the next 4 months as all prices of everything rise.

- Just remember: 10/7/3/1. China's GDP is growing at 10% a year, Idia's at 7% a year, the US's at a paltry 3% a year, and Europe's at 1% A year. China and India cannot satisfy their voracious hunger energy already, and with those numbers the game is already lost. American's just don't realize it yet. In a few years' time the amount of oil coming to the US will be leftover scraps from what isn't sent to the real profit generators, China and India. $3/gallon gas will be the stuff of myth. The US as an entity has no idea what's about to hit them. And why should they? They've gotten comfortable standing in the middle of the Freeway.

Sheesh.

Oh yeah, and I forgot one other point. I think by the broad definitions of the Patriot Act, Katrina might be classified as a terrorist. How long before Chimpo declares a "War on Nature"?
