The Wife in Florida

Sounds like a porn title. I can clinch it by adding "Naughty"... Tine and the kids (minus The Boy) left on Saturday for the week. So far, so good. Although she called me last night from the Hard Rock hotel to tell me she wasn't feeling so good. The Boy has been pretty good himself, something I am thus far very pleased with. He's been cooperative for the most part. Although he wasn't happy to get a bath last night. Hated it, and screamed, screamed, screamed when I poured water on his head.

We watched a bunch of movies, including: Monsters, Inc. and Airport '75. The Boy has to learn the perils of air travel and what you must do if you should ever find yourself in solo-command of a 747. That's right, you call Chuck Heston. Or George Kennedy; man that guy can be upset.

It's been hot and humid since they left which really means I don't feel like doing much when I'm home. Can't really watch TV on the big screen. I could, but then I'd only be cooling one room and that's stupid. Finn and I have played downstairs while the AC runs down there. He spends a lot of time jumping on my stomach. I try not to lie on the floor any more than possible. While he napped on Sunday, I unloaded the closet where my Lego collection has been hibernating. There's now 25+ bins downstairs and one of the bedrooms is chock full of most of the unopened stuff. Tine would have a fit if she were home... But you're not, are you! Mwhahahah!

It's the first time in almost a year since I've had access to everything. I think I may have wept. I found most of a ship I had been working on before I finally sealed it all up. I also introduced The Boy to the collection formally. He found the few Bionicles I have and has been somewhat content to play with them. He loves robots and dinosaurs right now. But my big plan here is to have him used to me working with bricks so every time I'm sitting there or opening a bin, he isn't in my face over it. I expect a slow process.

Last night, after dinner he was sitting next to me as we watch the news and he got right up nose-to-nose with me, his hands on my cheeks. He looked me directly in the eye and said softly, "Pay yeggos?" He did this three times and I caved. We opened one of the bigger bins and dumped it out on the floor and slowly rummaged through it. Several times I had to stop him from chucking parts across the room and once had to make sure he wasn't putting it in his mouth. But he was pretty good most of the time. More concerned with finding minfigs ("mans") and their hats than anything else. I built him a simple spaceship –a box with wings– and he had fun stuffing them in it like they were corpses.

Hot Chicks Accounting

Well, it seems a tad early this year, but the girls from HCA are back. Each year, the company audit occupies the library room and, since I've been here, they always appear to be young, pretty girls that do the grunt work. Probably that fresh-out-of-college-gets-the-shit-job rule. What does that say about our company?

Maybe they are doing something else. Come to think of it, I went by there a few times and I've only seen one of them. But she's certainly spread out like she's auditing... The HCA way. oh yeah...

Blech. I just ate a muffin from the vending machine (which is obviously my first mistake). It clamed to be a blueberry muffin, but it tasted anything but. If I had to classify it, I'd say it tasted more like a flowery perfume muffin. Which means, it's undoubtedly poisoned and I'm going to slip into a coma any minute now... at least my dying breaths will smell pretty.

RIP TiVo: 1 Year 10 Days

It really should have lasted longer, but this morning while trying to turn on some Elmo action for The Boy, TiVo was non-responsive. My first indication was a blank, dark screen staring me in the face.

I had a bad feeling over the last month or so. TiVo would occasionally freeze for a moment and would lock me out of control. It has sort of taken a beating here, especially with the kids bouncing around whatever program they felt like. Or pausing it just because. It might not actually be dead. It could have shut down and I can try restarted it.

It's a regular kind of hard drive in there too. They're not meant for that kind of 24/7/365 operation. But it still should have lasted more than a year. Stupid quality control; it's probably made in America. :P

But there is hope. There's a decent sized community and there are tons of help on upgrading and changing over to a new hard drive. My only hope is TiVo isn't dead. That the drive is still functioning, because then I can remove it and image the disc over to a new hard drive. Not to mention the half of a season of The Dead Zone and three unwatched Stargates.

The worst part is, it's sort of like being buried alive here. I mean, I have to actually watch TV or I'll miss something. If I can't hear it, or someone speaks, it's gone! No rewinding, no pausing. No quick recording to see it again later. It's barbaric, I tell you. Not to mention The Boy expect to be able to watch Elmo or Blue whenever the hell he wants.

My God, what have we done?!?

Sickie...

Ugh, I've laid up with something today that's kept me home and in bed in a near coma state most of the day. I think I've been awake only about 2 hours today. Undoubtedly the first stages of poisoning by my lovely wife. So if I'm found dead under mysterious circumstances, be sure to alert the proper authorities...

Bug Build Event

I had a freakin' blast this past Saturday. A group from NELUG, as well as LUCNY and GardenSLUG, came down to Entfield Conneicut to give them a hand building bugs. The PR departement is renovating a waiting area in the Children's Hospital with a rainforest theme. As it was explained to us, they have X amount for the budget, and that includes all the real-world things like carpet, seats and other regular features for a waiting area.

Bug building at Lego's American Headquarters in lovely Entfield, Connecticut. The models are supposed to end up in a display case at the Children's Hospital in Connecticut. They were probably sorry we came...

So we get to be free labor. But they gave us access to the company store which is 50% off retail. Sweet.

First, we met up at Solomon Pond Mall. There were two new guys Jason and Greg? (I'm terrible with names.) Carpooling was the best idea. I drove Joe and Tom in my caaaahh and the time just flew. Except for that moment at the beginning where I got "confused" on which way to go and sort of banged a semi-U-turn thru a red light - it was all smooth sailing.

Lego pulled out all their builder's stock and that set up was groovy. They keep everything sorted by color and element in grey trays, which they layed out over this giant presentation room. There was tons of old grey, old brown and some other very old parts (classic-space yellow glass and trans-yellow plates!). Some of it was clearly aged. There were bins of white that were more like yellowed teeth.

And there was bug building. Joe and I built 2 beetle like things which have latin names I can't possibly remember. One was yellow, does that help? Actually most of the creations were awesome. More than a few belong in a BrikWars Starship Troopers game... Oh, now *that* has possibilities...

A trip to the company store and I spent more than I meant to [1]. Plus, waiting for Joe's "Millenium Falcon" caused me to spend even more with his high-pressure buy-buy-buy techniques... I'm probably lucky someone got the last Star Destroyer, I was considering it because at 50% off, that's about the only way I would get that monster (it's about $300 normally).

Later, we headed back to Eric K's for food and he wowed us with his monument to consumer excess - a 5000-foot plasma TV that not only looks like a window on HDTV, actually allows you to step into the picture and stroll around until someone changes the channel. Truely amazing.

Here's my pics from the event:

[1] Actually, I'm not sure why this always surpises me. It's like a drug addition some times. You're there and you go into it thinking, "Okay, I'm going to get a couple of things and that's it." Then you stand there, amonst the items and think, "Okay, we'll I'll be kicking myself later for *not* pick that up at 50% off." In fact, I am -right now- kicking myself for not picking up the Land Busters set... *stupid!* *stupid!* *stupid!*

Ker-Pow!

My friend, Lisa Z (which sounds like a rapper... or stripper) had her Hyundai Accent turned into an accordion paperweight last week. She said she was perfectly fine, save a few cuts and bruises:

"I was fourth in line at a traffic light (10 minutes away from home). Light turned green, we all started to go. This guy was however far back, saw the light was green and our break lights weren't on, I guess and literally was zoning/spacing out – he just learned that he was getting laid off from AT&T. Pregnant wife, new house – he was spacin' and just didn't stop. So I was going probably 5 miles an hour – he had to be going at LEAST 50. Good thing was, I didn't see it coming."

Just like we're taught in cartoons, nobody's hurt or injured.

"...I was FINE. Didn't feel a thing. Walked out of the car. I was freaked cause of the smoke – thought I was on fire. Once the ambulance showed up and saw my car, they couldn't get me strapped to that board fast of enough. I gave them a hard time of course – hate to be strapped down... The boyfriend was at a game – couldn't get him on the phone. I got my friend Walter who was 5 minutes away. I made them wait until he got there. He road in the ambulance with me - made me laugh the whole way – he was great. sheesh."

Nearing The End

The humidity has been way the hell up over the last couple of days. We made the unfortunate discovery that the air conditioner we owned does not fit the new windows downstairs. Actually, we made this discovery a few weeks ago when it was hot and muggy for a day or so. I scarred the window frame trying to get the unit in, because it just misses being able to fit. That day I jury-rigged it in and used towels to fill up the gaps. It worked because I had no intention of leaving the unit in the window beyond that day.

The sunroom, with it's new thru-the-wall AC, still has no furniture in it. So, we decided to further invest in Home Depot and bought a new, smaller AC for the downstairs. At least they were on sale.

This past weekend I pulled the tape off the walls in the sunroom. The red got a quick coat in places that were clearly the worst, but it wasn't like I painted the room again. Probably took me a half hour or so. Then on Saturday, I took the tape off. I will say it came off easier than any of the other rooms. There were only two places where the paint peeled up like a Christmas present. In both cases, I managed to use more paint to act as a glue to put it back down. But there were plenty of other jagged, imperfections left making it look so unprofessional.

I can't win.

We did actually purchase the furniture for the new room. On Friday we ordered the set to be delivered this coming Friday. It's a deep olive-ish green we found about a month ago. We're pretty sure it will look good against the red walls. We also found a carpet faster than we anticipated (or we would have had the furniture delivered earlier). It's white. Which could be a big mistake, but it was cheaper than most of the others and if it lasts a few years then I'm okay with that. Of course, I'm going to have to institute a series of beatings to keep the children from tromping around up there with shoes or food. I figure I shouldn't warn them, I should just jump directly to the beatings. That should have a dramatic impact on their psyche and reinforce the notion I Ain't Fucking Around.

So the furniture comes this Friday. I think I found a good set of end-tables with a coffee table. The only thing left is that damned television. Cable is coming to hook up the new room so we'll have to move the old set up there for now, but Tine was so looking forward to a huge widescreen TV. Oh, I'll complain about that soon enough.

I can't wait for this part to be done. Then it's done-done. Well, actually, I didn't get to shaving Mike's door yet. It rained me out. But that shouldn't take too long. Then it's done. Then I can start worrying about my area and busting out my Lego from it's long slumber.
