Oddly Disturbing
I downloaded a mod for Battlefield: 1942 this weekend. Desert Combat turns the WWII FPS into a modern combat FPS based around the Iraq Conflict. I think it's more modeled on the first Gulf War.
Some of it is pretty neat. You get tanks, jets, helicopters, scud missiles, all modern stuff. I particularly like the No Fly Zone maps where it's all jet combat.
However, some of the other maps, the more solider vs. solider stuff takes place in cities and towns (some desert maps that are all armor) and that stuff is oddly disturbing.
I didn't really notice it until this one map that pits the Coalition forces at the bottom base with a couple of Blackhawks against a town at the top. You have to take about 10 flags all within a very small area. But the Opposition (Iraqis) come from everywhere. There's no real way to fully defend an area. You take a flag and they just come at you from behind.
Now, I've never been in combat. And I'm quite sure it's about a billion times more scary, but I was freaking out at how difficult it was to hold onto one area.
Maybe it's because of the way the world is right now. But that map and then subsequent other ground combat maps seemed a little too real. Which is odd because why shouldn't the WWII stuff have the same effect? I mean, Omaha Beach was a hell of bloody battle, yet I look at the game version as only a pain-in-the-ass map. I don't like it because it's not fun for me. There's something disturbing about that mod.
